Another patient of Dr. Winslow’s, Holly Martin*, age 45, conceived after treatment and gave birth to a healthy baby. Holly says, “We went through a lot to have this baby.” Holly and her husband began trying to conceive when Holly was 38. When the couple first went to see Dr. Winslow, he tested both of them, standard procedure to determine the cause of infertility. As the cause was not absolutely determined at this point, Dr. Winslow put Holly on the maximum dosage of follicle stimulating hormone, the strongest drug given for stimulation of ovulation.
Dr. Winslow explained the egg donor program to Holly and her husband, who decided to try that method. Cindy Brubaker, then head of the egg donor program at FIRM, helped Holly throughout the very emotional process. “I had decided that if I couldn’t use my own eggs, I would stop. When I found out my eggs were not an option, I quickly decided to use the donor egg program and have never regretted it. I was surprised at what a wonderful experience it turned out being for me. I felt very close to my donor, even though she was anonymous, knowing that we were going through a process together. A person who donates their eggs so a couple she does not even know can become a family is a truly loving and generous soul. It was an amazing experience receiving this gift from a stranger. I have never experienced that kind of generosity before and it affected me at a very deep level.”
